INTERVIEW
Judith Pennington:
Carrying Forward the Legacy of Anna Wise
by Suzanne Tempel
When Anna Wise passed the torch of the Awakened Mind legacy, it wasn’t simply the handover of a teaching — it was the continuation of a lineage rooted in science, spirituality, and service. Judith Pennington, a long-time student, collaborator, and now revered teacher in her own right, took that flame and kindled it into a global community. Through her stewardship, the Institute for the Awakened Mind was born — not as a static organization, but as a living, evolving platform for consciousness exploration, practitioner training, and technological innovation. In this exclusive conversation with Suzanne, the Institute’s new director, Judith reflects on her journey, her deep commitment to the legacy of Anna Wise and Maxwell Cade, and the bright future she envisions for the next generation of awakened minds.

QUESTION:
What did it mean to you to carry forward the legacy of Anna Wise?
JUDITH:
It meant the world to me. My own spiritual outreach and training naturally led me to Anna’s work, which I found deeply resonant. Anna, before passing, had been encouraged to decentralize her teachings so others could continue her legacy. I became part of that, assisting her in practitioner trainings and later, after her passing, stepping in to develop the infrastructure that would sustain her work. There were many parts to the legacy: the Mind Mirror technology, Anna’s recordings, and primarily, the practitioner community. I had already seen the need for a centralized directory of practitioners, which I developed with the help of Anna’s family. From there, things grew organically—what started as a simple list of things I wanted to do evolved into the Institute for the Awakened Mind, complete with a growing website, training manuals, and global practitioner support.
question:
How would you describe the evolution of the Institute under your leadership?
Judith:
It was spirit-led and very synchronistic. I started with the practitioner directory, but along the way, practitioner trainees came along with suggestions and help, like naming the organization “Institute for the Awakened Mind,” creating the first website, IAM’s monthly webinar programs and “Eureka Times” newsletter, even alerting me to the existence of Vilistus in the UK, which led to development of the Mind Mirror 6, a huge technological upgrade. Through the years, I wrote practitioner manuals and training guides that consolidated and standardized the work. The new Mind Mirror greatly occupied my attention for years while I integrated the capabilities and functions I knew practitioners wanted and needed, from 4-person monitoring to the reintegration of our physiology measurements.

In 2016, I recovered Max Cade’s recorded meditation cassettes and informal papers, expanding our wisdom resources, and began working with Oxana Bondarchuk, a practitioner I trained who generously volunteered to facilitate the webinar programs and produce “Eureka Times.” Oxana’s artistic skills and organization abilities gave beauty and structure to both and made them possible. The webinar program and newsletter were created to build community and provide support for practitioners and self-trainers.

Decentralizing training so practitioners could be trained worldwide became key. Several important projects came along in 2019. I recorded 40 of Max and Anna’s meditations in a professional studio, and Braden Ong and I developed the Mind Mirror Portal, where those 13 meditation albums, plus seven of my own, are housed in the Meditation Center. I wanted to make those meditations available to everyone, and now they are. That completed my original vision and plans for IAM.
question:
Why is the Institute for the Awakened Mind unique in the world of consciousness studies and brainwave research?
Judith:
No other organization combines practical, proven research tools like the Mind Mirror with decades of consciousness research and an ongoing global community of practitioners. Our work can actually demonstrate shifts in consciousness through brainwave patterns, supporting both anecdotal and empirical outcomes. With media coverage and reputable collaborations, our platform is well-poised to remain at the forefront of global consciousness research.
question:
What are you most proud of when you look back at your journey?
Judith:
Definitely the infrastructure—the organizational foundations, writing all those materials, and pulling together the knowledge and the network for the Institute for the Awakened Mind. I’m also proud of reviving Max Cade’s work, expanding the reach and credibility of the field, and of the practitioners I’ve trained and certified over the years, who I’ve absolutely loved working with and count among my dearest friends. The continued evolution of the Mind Mirror has been critical, as IAM could not have survived without it. But also, I’m very proud of the Mind Mirror Portal and its Meditation Center. The guided meditations are evolutionary for self-trainers and everyone else who buys them. At last, the Mind Mirror and Awakened Mind meditations are reunited, as it was in Max and Anna’s time, and that’s of great value to meditators worldwide. Several practitioners are using the guided meditations and the Mind Mirror’s self-training program in medical clinics and holistic healing centers to help their patients and clients. I hope we see much more of that in future.
question:
Was there anything you had to sacrifice along the way?
Judith:
Primarily time and income, but it never felt like a true sacrifice. This work was a labor of love, supported by serendipity and spiritual guidance. Even as responsibilities grew and required letting go of my own projects, I was excited by the opportunities to capture lost meditations, build online resources, and train more practitioners.
question:
Now that things are evolving and you have more time, what are you looking forward to?
Judith:
With much of the infrastructure running smoothly, I’m excited to focus on new projects. Some in cooperation with practitioner/software developer Braden Ong and other practitioners, including the Mind Mirror’s new website and the development of a more affordable, consumer-grade Mind Mirror. Deepening research partnerships (such as with The Monroe Institute), and finally having time to write more books. I plan to launch a spiritual teaching platform called “The Light of Awakening,” and I’m very excited about that, as it will take me back to my original work. And I will happily continue to train practitioners. That will keep me connected with the heart and soul of IAM.
question:
Do you have a message for the community of practitioners, trainers, and students?
Judith:
I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone stepping into new roles with the Institute, especially you, Suzanne. As I pass the torch, I do so with confidence and appreciation for all those who’ve supported and contributed to this journey—seen and unseen. This legacy is precious, and every bit of work we do together keeps the light of awakened mind work shining.
Made on
